I promised to tell the story of our experience with a southern right whale and her calf.

Baby Southern Right Whale

Mothers are so protective in the wild, and seriously, can you blame them?
This is an environment where only the strongest survive…

Mom and calf.

That doesn’t mean that their young aren’t curious and that, at times, moms have to intervene. We were watching them from a distance when all of a sudden baby popped up a short distance from us and drifted towards the boat.

In an instance, mom came up from below and gentlely but with a certain affirmation worked her way between the boat and baby. She definitely made it clear that this is a “no-go” zone.

It was, for us, mere little mortals, an astonishing moment. I was lucky enough to have my camera in hand and managed to snap a few pics. We left shortly afterwards, and I am sure that mom gave baby a stern whale whisper or two.
