I’ve always been fascinated by this rigid piece of equipment known as a “windpomp” (windmill). At times I even recall one or two road trips based on these weirdly positioned metal structures. Especially when driving through the Karoo and other arid parts of Southern Africa. The good old-fashioned windpomp is part of our South African countryside culture and adds to the exclusivity of our varied landscape.

The ‘windpomp” has become the topic of some of my social media postings, with a little “tongue in cheek humour. Why you ask? That’s because the brand, that I have an affinity for, goes by the name “Climax”!! For some of you who have not noticed, stop at a windmill next time and have a look for the climax branding. The Climax “windpomp” has been manufactured by Stewards and Lloyds in South Africa since 1942, shows that by 1974 over 150,000 units had been manufactured and by 1996 over 200,000. That’s a lot of climaxes …..grin
