Tucked quietly between the folds of the Outeniqua foothills lies the little village of Friemersheim… the kind of place you don’t just visit, you gently stumble into, like finding a pressed flower in an old book 🌿

A few years ago, I took the turnoff just outside Groot-Brak, not entirely sure what I’d find… and ended up in a place that felt like a living canvas. Once known as Gonnakraal, this historic mission village has traded whispers of the past for bursts of colour.
Homes and buildings double as an open-air gallery, where wildlife and flowers stretch boldly across walls as if the landscape itself decided to paint portraits of its own beauty 🎨

I spent the morning wandering slowly, letting the artwork guide me from one corner to the next. Every turn revealed something new… a curious creature peeking from a wall, petals unfolding in paint, stories told without a single word. But the real magic? The people. Friendly waves, easy conversations, and that unmistakable small-town warmth that makes you feel like you’ve been there before.

At one point, I even bumped into the local police… who, without hesitation, joined in for a photo. Just like that. No fuss, just laughter and a shared moment.

Friemersheim is also part of the Fragrance Route, and you can feel it in the air. Surrounded by protea farms and lavender nurseries, there’s a softness to the place… a quiet perfume carried on the breeze as the road winds through rolling hills.

It’s not a destination that shouts for attention. It simply waits… patient and colourful, ready to be discovered. And if you take that scenic drive, you’ll understand exactly why it’s worth it 🚗💫

Beautifully written Rose. Now I have to go find Friemersheim! xx
